History of Bhimashanker Temple
In the calm forest of Bhimashankar, there was a Demon called Tripurasura who wanted godly powers for selfish reasons. So in order to achieve this, he decided to meditate and please Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva who is known for his kindness towards all of his devotees was pleased with his(Tripurasura) devotion towards him and decided to grant him a wish. The Asura, sticking to his cause asked for immortality. Lord Shiva Granted his wish on just one condition that his powers should always be used in the interest of the people, and if he doesn't then he must go through the punishment for violation.
For some time, Tripurasura forgot that his immortality was achieved on behest of a condition and eventually turned to ruthlessness and tyranny instead of kindness and compassion. Chaos erupted soon and not only the people but sages and gods also started feeling unsafe and trembled in fear in the name of Tripurasura. So everyone decided to turn to Lord Shiva for a remedy to the problem known as Tripurasura.
